Three patterns we see the most.
Pick the one that feels closest, or read on. Either way the next step is the same: a thorough first session focused on finding the cause, not just easing the symptom.
01 · The back
01
Back pain
The kind that wakes you before the alarm.
Most back pain is about how the body has been moving, not damage that needs fixing. We find the pattern, work with it gently, and give the back room to settle.
02 · The neck
02
Neck pain
The kind that builds through a Wednesday.
Your neck carries a five-kilo head all day. Headaches, knots and stiffness are the natural consequence. We treat the cervical spine gently, and the relief follows.
03 · The shoulder
03
Shoulder pain
The kind that turns reaching overhead into a calculation.
The shoulder is well-used and complex. We trace the pattern, restore how the joint actually moves, and help it be a shoulder again.
Most pain doesn't arrive suddenly.
It builds. Quietly. Over months. Sometimes years.
Maybe it starts in the shoulder.
The one you slept on funny. The one that catches when you reach to the top shelf.
Or the neck.
The knot under the shoulder blade. The one that stiffens when the Wednesday meetings start running long.
Or the back.
The one that lets you know about it when you bend down to put your shoes on.
You stretch differently. You sleep on the other side. You take the lift instead.
Until one day, something small reminds the body that it's tired of compensating.
This is the conversation osteopathy listens to.
And then helps your body unwind.

Curious, inquisitive, with a find it and fix it approach.
Geoffrey, or Geoff as most people know him, is an experienced and dedicated osteopath whose personal values line up with the core principles of osteopathy. He is a naturally inquisitive and solutions-focused practitioner who takes a holistic view of health and goes out of his way to listen attentively to his clients’ concerns.
With a curiosity for physics and mechanics, Geoffrey began his career in engineering before a lecture on ergonomics sent him in a different direction. He qualified as an osteopath from RMIT in 1992 and opened the Camberwell clinic in 1993. With a family background in traditional Chinese medicine, he draws from a blend of both Eastern and Western practicalities.
Geoffrey's approach starts with listening carefully, before any hands-on work begins. He is committed to finding the underlying cause of your pain rather than just easing the symptoms, and works with you on a realistic plan built around your goals, your version of moving well, and getting back to the activities you love.
Most back pain is poor function. Not damage.
Most people, regardless of age and fitness level, experience some form of back pain. Many cases of acute upper and lower back pain are the result of poor function or movement. With the right hands-on treatment and a few lifestyle changes, the body finds relief from many muscular and soft-tissue conditions in a matter of weeks.
Our first task is a physical assessment to understand exactly what is causing your pain. Osteopathy is a gentle, hands-on treatment that uses a variety of techniques to alleviate muscle and tendon tension. We match the pressure of any massage or muscle manipulation to your pain tolerance.
- Lower back stiffness on waking
- Pinches between the shoulder blades
- Twinges lifting, sneezing, stairs
- Pain travelling into the hip
- Old sport, work or garden injuries
- Pre and post-natal back discomfort
A heavy load, a complex structure. And the screens are not helping.
Your neck and cervical spine is a complex structure of bones, muscles, ligaments, blood vessels and nerves, supporting a head that weighs around five kilograms. With that load to bear, neck stiffness, muscle tightness and tension headaches are common conditions that osteopathy can treat effectively.
Pain is an important guide to understanding what your limit is. By speaking with you in detail, we can advise on the types of activity that will help rehabilitate the neck, and the ones to ease off for now. Treatment is gentle and incremental. Movement returns first. The rest follows.
- Stiff neck after a poor sleep
- Tension headaches at work
- Upper trapezius knots
- Limited range reversing the car
- Jaw tension tied in with the neck
- Old whiplash or desk-work patterns
A well-used joint, a common ache. And a treatable one.
The shoulder is a complex, well-used joint and a common source of pain for people of all ages and fitness levels. Whether the trouble is from wear and tear, repetitive use, or an injury, osteopathy is a gentle and helpful treatment for many conditions of the shoulder, including pain associated with AC joint and rotator cuff issues.
We assess how the joint actually moves, look at the surrounding tissue, and trace the pattern that has built up. Often the shoulder is doing the work that the upper back or the scapula has stopped doing. When that re-balances, the shoulder gets to be a shoulder again.
- Sharp catch reaching overhead
- Pain sleeping on that side
- AC joint discomfort after a fall
- Rotator cuff strains carrying
- Mouse-arm tension
- Gardening or DIY shoulders
What happens when you book.
We listen.
What hurts. When it started. What makes it better, what makes it worse. The whole story before the hands.
We assess.
A thorough physical assessment. How you move. How the joints sit. Where the load actually goes.
We treat.
Gentle, hands-on osteopathy, matched to your tolerance. We don't push past what your body is asking for in the room.
We make a plan with you.
A realistic pathway to recovery. Self-care strategies between visits. An honest sense of how many sessions, before you commit to any of them.
Common questions, before you book.
About an hour. We start by listening to your story, then move into a physical assessment to understand exactly what is going on. From there, we begin gentle hands-on treatment, matched to your tolerance. You leave with a clearer sense of the cause and a realistic plan for what comes next.
The fee is shown the moment you choose a service in the online booking above, so you know it before you confirm. If you have private health extras, we process the rebate through HICAPS at the clinic and you pay only the gap on the day. The exact gap depends on your fund, level of cover and remaining annual limit.
No. Geoffrey works gently. The pressure of any massage or muscle manipulation is matched to your pain tolerance, and the view he holds is that more treatment pain does not necessarily lead to more gain. If a technique is uncomfortable, say so and he will ease off.
Often just a few. It depends on the cause and how long the pattern has been there. Many issues respond well to a small number of sessions over a few weeks. Recurring or longer-standing patterns may benefit from a slightly longer course, with self-care strategies to support you between visits. We will give you an honest sense of this at your first session, not before.
No. Osteopathy is a primary contact health profession, so you can book directly. A referral is only needed for certain Medicare chronic disease management plans, or if your private health fund requires one for a specific extras claim.
Yes, osteopathy is a claimable service under most extras policies. We process the rebate through HICAPS at the clinic, so you pay only the gap on the day. The exact amount depends on your fund, level of cover, and remaining annual limit.
Pre and post-natal musculoskeletal conditions are one of Geoffrey's special interests. Treatment is adapted to the trimester or stage of recovery, and we use positioning and pressure suited to where your body is. Bring any relevant medical information from your maternity care team.
Wear comfortable clothing you can move in, the kind of thing you would wear to a casual appointment. Bring your private health card if you would like to claim through HICAPS on the day, and any relevant scans, imaging or letters from other practitioners. There is nothing else you need to prepare beforehand.
The clinic is at 183 Through Road, Camberwell. Street parking is generally available in the surrounding streets. We are close to trams and buses for Hawthorn East, Surrey Hills, Glen Iris and Camberwell residents.
